Deprived of sight, my tactile senses had to compensate, letting me know what products I had, remembering where to put them, the movement I use, the textures they were meant to have, etc.
Disconnecting my appearance from a sense of intense shame forced me to contemplate where my intrinsic value lay.
I was inspired by Naomi Wolf's book, The Beauty Myth, and how it talked about how women are trained to have a sense of shame surrounding their default, and to spend their time, money, effort and thought in changing that. I contemplated how it might look if I applied makeup as blindly as she purported they (society, beauty companies, men, women, etc) wanted me to. It did, indeed, look as ridiculous as it felt.
