This is my first rough draft of my manifesto. I wanted to consider what I wanted to create or experience, and what were some of the obstacles I have or may encounter. I also realize it will definitely change at some point, so here goes nothing!

I Want to Create:

  • Permission:
    • for myself to make mistakes, fumble, learn, and laugh about it
    • to set aside distractions
    • or if they can't be set aside, to explore distractions
    • for others to be themselves and be expressive
    • for myself to be expressive, to be creative
    • to choose my boundaries
    • to be still, to be loved
    • to be dynamic
  • Creative Space
    • that is orderly, so I can find what I need
    • that is organic and dynamic, so I'm free to be as limited or unlimited depending on my needs and my creation
    • that is reserved for creative activity
    • that interacts with my day-to-day life
    • that is hopeful, positive, and enlightened
    • that is informed, evolving, and renewing
  • Conversations:
    • with myself, my community, my country, my world, and my universe
    • that reveal a new perspective, then another, and another
    • that encourage meaningful interactions that may be treasured in the future
    • that address the beautiful, the ugly, the mundane, the treasured, the conflicted, the peaceful, the ignored, the ridiculed, the great, and the small
  • Immersive Experiences:
    • by being present
    • by living real life, with real people, and seeing the real world
    • using space and context that is believable and relatable
    • by working, then resting, and working some more
    • by finding opportunities for the art and the audience to interact
    • by seeking other artists and chances to collaborate
    • by asking "Why does it matter?" and then showing why it matters
    • by continually working, growing, learning, and changing
  • Attitude:
    • that it's okay to be afraid
    • to not hang onto my hopes more than my fears
    • that I can always do something
    • that I can give time for myself, my work, and for those I love
    • that the necessities and the details will come as I go
    • to never give up, and to never doubt the divine or myself

Personal Manifesto - Allison Ipson

 PERSONAL MANIFESTO

1.   Learn from everyone, even if you don’t agree with them.

2.   Stay up late or get up early if you need to, but work through the times when the ideas are slow.

3.   Allow and expect feedback. Your work can always be improved.

4.   Create work that will cause people to pause and look. Allow there to be more meaning to be found for those who seek it.

5.   Hard work and time can make up for any skill you may feel you are lacking.

6.   Research. If you haven’t thought it out, the idea probably isn’t going to go very far.

7.   Anywhere you are can be inspiring. Learn to look around.

8.   Push yourself to create things that are out of your current capabilities. The harder you try, the more you will learn, whether it works or not.

9.   Even when those around you don’t understand what you are doing, if you have a vision, they eventually will too.

10. Write down ideas as you have them, especially in the middle of the night. If it was enough to wake you up, you’ll probably want to look at it again.

11.  Don’t let a lack of resources stop you. Create your own.

12.  There are more projects than the ones with deadlines. Remember that they are important too.

13.  Don’t stop creating, but don’t stop life in order to create. You have other responsibilities – learn to balance them.

14. Enjoy the process, whether it’s your favorite or not. You never know when something will come in handy, so you might as well enjoy doing it.

15.  Show others your work! Growth, appreciation, and opportunities won’t happen until you put yourself out there.

16.  Ask questions. Make connections. The best time to act is now, and you never know what is waiting for you.

Manifesto - Andrea Martinez

McCallister's Manifesto - Calli Sumsion

McCallister's Manifesto

I can quit if I want to, but it is like breathing or eating, I must create. I feel paralyzed without it. It comes from the deepest part of my soul.

I have never been good at words, but art is a way I can speak, my sketchbook is my freedom to express what I cannot say in words. I hope to bring the emotions I have to others through the blank canvas.

Yes, there are art classes, and I am glad to learn and grow but you cannot grade creativity nor give it a deadline, therefore it cannot be rushed.

No one told me to do it, to make art or pursue it as a career, and most of society sees our community as the starving artists, yet it I would die from starvation doing something I do not love.

I am inspired to create my own future and to create more because of it.

My Manifesto - Emilee Thomas

I Believe in the Art of a Creative Life

  • I believe in the art of dreaming and taking time to scratch down notes, half asleep, at 2AM.

  • I believe in the art of finding your true self seeping through as you step back from the cracking sidewalks of life and observe nature who, in turn, observes you.

  • I believe in the art of playing and being goofy and horsing around with small children, teenagers, young adults, adults, the elderly, and pets, causing you to refresh yourself from the mundane and collect bits of value from each life.

  • I believe in the art of travel, finding new places, and exploring the intricacies of places you’ve already been.

  • I believe in the art of listening.  No words, no judgments, no interruptions.  Just listening.

  • I believe in the art of taking into consideration the advice of those more experienced than you, whether or not you enjoy their company.  Application is optional, but openness is critical.

  • I believe in the art of critiquing and being critiqued which both take open minds, hearts, and, most importantly, humility.

  • I believe in the art of multitasking and having side projects available for the days you hit a creative wall.

  • I believe in the art of utilizing music that inspires or speaks to you.

  • I believe in the art of taking a step back and basking in the duality of your existence - both horribly insignificant when compared to the stars and vast galaxy, but also unimaginably important in ways you will never fully comprehend.

TDMorris

From Under Giant Sunflowers of a Personal Zen Space

1)     Sometimes the space is more important than the art created in that space.

2)     If that space is defined then it is limited, so it hasn’t been defined, as of yet.

3)     Creative behavior is to define that space,

Ø  that I carry around like a pocket full of rocks,

Ø  that I take out periodically to skip across the water,

Ø  that builds momentum with each ripple,

Ø  that emanates from the shore

Ø  and from each breath.

Ø  A cool breeze is more important then

Ø  and it comes again with each thought, each prayer.

4)     When prayers are connected to the sunflowers they are limited.

5)     Prayers are taken aloft by the clouds, even though I don’t listen to Cumulus Nimbus rims,

6)     Ah, but the space, the corridors between the clouds welcome that embrace.

Ø  everything is theater.

Ø  everything is from a point of view

Ø  everything is fluid between mediums

Ø  everything is perspective

Ø  and there is ease between suspended disbelief,

Ø  where vernacular matters, dialogue is motion

Ø  and in that regard, experience is everything

Artist Manifesto- Jess Hebertson

(I started this by just writing down words and phrases that came to mind when I thought about my personal art-making philosophy. I was intending to expand upon them, but I found that the simple lines had a flow that I liked, so I turned them into a sort of poem. Enjoy!)

Manifesto

Go big, go small, go home.

Flux, change, reuse, recycle.

Always be ready,

Keep a sketchbook, take pictures, write it down.

An artist is someone who makes art

So you might as well claim the title.

Create humility AND confidence.

It’s not about being the best in the room, unless you’re the only one in the room.

Make mistakes, keep them, don’t hide your strokes.
Change as quickly as you can think,

Adding and discovering.

Embody, resonate.

Not all ideas, beliefs, thoughts,

Deserve equal respect, you do not have to consider Nazis, you do not have to respect hate.

Push boundaries, yours and others.

Communicate and convey.

Give and take.

Feel, experience.

Read.

Listen.

Work and work and work enough and work harder.

Passion, ambition,

Fiery, a force of nature.

Art is never something out of nothing, it is something out of everything

Consume, collect, convey

Hoard ideas and images and life and supplies

Make art with energy, emotion, presence.

Make art that looks the way music feels.

Make art even when no one else cares.
