Anish Kapoor

According to Kapoor it is his role as an artist to say something, to express, to be expressive. He thinks it’s his role as an artist to bring to expression, but it’s not his role to be expressive. He has got nothing particular to say, he doesn’t have any message to give anyone. But it is his role to bring to expression, let’s say, to define means that allow phenomenological and other perceptions which one might use, one might work with, and then move towards a poetic existence.

‘making work is about daring to go where I don’t know and hoping that in going to where I don’t know, you, the viewer, can go somewhere you don’t know either’.

Do It- Brandee Watters

1. Find a piece of paper
2. Sign, write, or draw your name.
3. Give the paper to a friend.
4. Have them abstract the letters. They can become completely unrecognizable or stay true to the existing form. But, all the letters must be altered in some way.
5. Get the paper back.
6. Color the now abstracted signature to your liking.

Or older- in computer years.

Sierra beat Armando. Didn't hear his name
Until later
When I wrote this thing down.

One guy refused, the next knew,
And the girl said she loved haiku poetry
On her AP test.

Their haiku: Fighting is not good.
Getting kicked in the face hurt.
So please don ot fight.

Before passing on the haiku poem, we forgot one last thing—
To say “face” to those deemed deserving of the work.
But she came back, and we
Said face. The poem said face, too. And I was glad.
We were glad.

We said face twice

to the girl.

walking the line - Dakota Frazier

DO IT - Dakota Frazier

Enter Galactic
(I'm no professional, these are starter instructions from an amateur)

I. Select a planet size (stencil)
II. Select a color scheme; i.e. 3 different colors
III. Select a planet type (ringed, earth-like, rocky moon/mars, swirly planet)
IV. Lightly spray the paint on your paper or board, avoid creating pools of paint, layering your scheme; i.e. red, yellow with green stripes.
V. Create your planet tetexture (swirls, rocky, striped) using different materials, i.e. plastic bag, your hand, crumpled magazine page.
VI. Lightly spray black on one side of the planet in the shape of a thin crescent moon.
VII. Take your planet stencil and cover your entire planet, avoid sliding the stencil by weighing it down with your hand or a stone.
VIII. Proceed by spraying the area around the stencil black. Then choose a small section of the stencil to spray white on, maybe like a 3rd.
IX. Carefully remove stencil and enjoy!
P.s. If planet does not come out how you imagined don't worry, everything takes practice!

NOVELLA
Project by Nick Nuttall

i.                   Find two different books by different authors.

ii.                 Tear one page out of the first book. This page must end with an incomplete sentence.

iii.               Look through the second book and find a page that starts with a phrase that can complete the sentence.

iv.               Tear that page out.

v.                 Place these pages together on a plain background in order.

vi.               Make sure people know what they’re in for by coloring these pages and the background in. Use colors that describe the tone of each sentence on each page.

vii.            Frame and hang.

Create your own time limits to possibly control the rate of abstraction

1. Obtain a word at random
2. Show a person this word and have them draw it on a separate paper
3. Show a person the picture that was drawn and have them write what they observe on a separate paper
4. Show a person what was written on the paper and have them draw it on a separate piece of paper
5. Continue until satisfied with your result
6. Hang the pictures and words up on a wall in order to observe the abstraction.

Do It / Do It Again - Clint Stevens

“Animal of My Eye”

1. Draw an eye large enough to adequately fill the space of the provided loom.

2. Draw a picture of an animal face in the center of the eye (iris/ pupil area.)

3. Simplify the drawing to a basic design that can be turned into a stencil. (basically just make sure that  all the sections of the piece are connected in some way so that design elements aren’t lost when cutting our the stencil.)

4. Once you have the stencil cut out and ready, tighten the provided fabric to the provided loom, lay your stencil over the fabric, making sure only the areas you want painted are uncovered.)

5. Spray paint the stencil, let dry and remove stencil.  You’re done!

(you can interpret these instructions as loosely as you wish, I really appreciate your help with this project!)

- Clint Stevens

I had a few friends and family do these. For the second attempt I tried to reverse the concept and use cardboard with embroidery stitching.
