Risky environment:
Chaotic
Very limited to no limits
No rules
No sleep, no room to move saftely, no where to rest, constantly moving,
Work with another person at all times

Safe environment:
Green house full of plants, with a subtle breeze and a hammock.

Creative Environment

SAFE ENVIRONMENT

Basic needs: water, electricity, internet
Supplies: pencils, paper, color pencils, eraser, etc.
(Optional) a pet to keep you company.

A place where you can take a break, like a sofa, a bed or a comfortable chair. A place away from your workplace in order to not be stressed by the incomplete work.
Fridge/ mini-fridge: where you can store food.
A table for your workplace and the break spot.
A window.
Bathroom.
A bucket where you can throw away your work which you are not satisfied with and burn it.
TV for entertainment purposes.
A shelf with your resources, snacks, the sacred corner (a spot that symbolizes that this is your place), supplies, etc.
A comfortable chair to avoid back problems.

DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENT

Basic needs: water (a leak), electricity (flickering lights, blackouts), internet (bad connection)
Supplies: pencils, paper (a leak destroying your papers), color pencils, eraser, etc.

A disorganized place.
Small shelf/ no shelf where you can safely store your work, supplies and other stuff.
Dead looking place.
Uncomfortable chair.
Outside noise or noisy neighbors that might affect your concentration while working.
Poor internet connection that might slow down the process of getting resources, information or uploading your work.
A place that doesn’t satisfy your needs (depends on the person).

I initially set out to design in detail what two creative spaces, one cultivating risk, and one cultivating safety, would actually physically look like. As I thought back on our class discussions on what constituted creative "safety" and "risk," it became more difficult for me to differentiate between the distinct elements of such in a visual form. To me, a physical space is a physical space, and it's more about the circumstances and contexts surrounding such that causes it to encompass characteristics of one or the other. Such circumstances could involve things like privacy, security, and the purpose behind the space and why I am creating art there. I began to consider how characteristics of safety and risk could be interchangeable, for myself. Unlimited access to resources, for example, could cultivate risk, as you have more freedom to pursue such. It can also cultivate safety, as since you're not forced to push yourself as much to adapt to your limited resources. For me, this project became a work in progress about trying to find out what aspects of creative safety and risk are actually completely separate, and how that could be visually depicted.

For my good space it has to have something comfy to sit on like a couch. it also should have a fridge and a table to put the food from the fridge on to eat. I would also like for there to be a lot of open space and a wall window so I am able to look outside and see the beautiful nature. there also needs to be a storage room for the equipment that I use.

For my risky space there is absolutely no light nor windows in there so nobody can see where anything is. there will be no storage room as well. there is only one table but has no chair to it and on the floor there is items that can hurt and cut your foot open.

I created a floor plan of what I would create given no restrictions on money and legal restrictions in the case of the fear inducing environment. I wanted to make my fear inducing environment a complete miserable experience to channel all the scared emotions I possibly can. My enriching environment was created to make my inner child the most happy it could be. It also helps keep myself organized and helps create high quality productive creative pieces.

My risk taking environment would be lots of people and group working, and a limited supply on money! An environment that would be out of my comfort zone is somewhere with little nature (like an urban area). Other things that would be risky for me as a photographer is cold weather and snow, working with paints or other unfamiliar mediums, and working in a messy/ unorganized environment.

My safe space is somewhere I feel inspired and somewhere I feel safe to be myself. This would be somewhere with natural lighting, plants, exposure to the outdoors, and having a clean space to think. Having pictures and inspirational literature would be crucial to my safe space because it promotes my creative ideas. Other things that promote my creativity are travel, food, friends, and using a camera!

When I’m in my own comfort space I generally want it warmer. I need to have comfort lighting and a feline companion aside me. I like being alone with something living that can’t talk. I feel pressure when I’m around other people and that severely effects my productivity. I need to have my technology as I get too stressed out to listen to music all the time. I also added a beanbag when my back gets tired and I need to relax.

My risky studio is essentially anywhere but home. I don’t like working around other people. I hate bright fluorescent lighting. And I can’t sit and listen to music the whole time. I hate having a space to do my work when I have to clean it up immediately after. I don’t like working in close proximity of others. I hate having other students using loud speakers. I believe in order to create work uninterrupted. All outside inference should be quiet enough not to be interrupting, also I’m not a fan of artist talking around me. I prefer complete silence.

Smile at a stranger

I went into the library and walked around. Sitting occasionally in different spots to look around at the students in the library. If I made eye contact I would smile and if feeling awkward I would wave. Some students would feel awkward as I didn’t know them very well, on one occasion a smiled at a group of girls and they all laughed and left their table. I’m pretty sure I freaked them out. I thought it was weird how people think that it’s so out of the ordinary to smile at strangers. Being nice made me feel like a creep, I felt like my smile was weird and I was an odd-looking person in their eyes. Which was not the case of course. It was a fun experiment but definitely out of my comfort zone. Its interesting to see how we pay little to no attention to one another even with strangers.
