I had around twenty people answer the following question on pieces of paper:
if you were to have a photograph of any tragic experience in your life, what would it look like?
I chose ten of these papers and brought them to class.

This is what the boards looked like with the papers my classmates brought in combined with papers that visitors wrote on to answer the various questions.

Creative Future - Steven Stallings

I would like to make a living off of being a full time artist and musician. This semester, I started to experiment with how I can cross both of these realms of creative expression in my work. I'm attending BYU starting this summer, so I am very excited to continue my research while I'm there. I hope to make a lot of connections while attending the Y while getting into shows, self-publishing art books, composing a lot of music, and creating many art works including paintings, videos, installations, and Photos. By the time I am finished with BYU, I would have applied to some of the major art schools in the country to receive a Masters degree. These schools include Yale, Columbia, Juilliard, The Monk Institute, UCLA, Berkeley, Manhattan School of Music and as well as some others. Currently, my first choice is Columbia, and if I am accepted, I would move to New York City. While in NYC, I'd be able to study and collaborate with very fine artists and musicians. By then, I hope to have better fused the worlds of art and music. After getting a Masters, I plan on either living in NYC or Los Angeles where I'd try to "make it." By making it, I mean I would like to start showing in galleries, playing at venues, going on tours, and collaborating with artists and musicians who are all coming from different backgrounds. Eventually, I would get to the point where I'm leading and composing for my own experimental ensemble and be performing across the world on tours. Also, it would be my dream to have shows in venues such as MoMA in NYC, The Guggenheims, The New Museum, The Whitney, The Tates in England, the Gagosian Galleries, and other venues across the world. I would like to be a professor at a major University such as the ones I previously mentioned. At some point I'd have a retrospective at MoMA or some other major museum. I'll work until I pass away. This is my dream.

What have I learned?

• Anything and everything can be art.
• Art is subjective.
• Experimentation, thought, and failure are all extremely important and necessary within the creative process.
• Inspiration can come from anywhere and strike at any time.
• Procrastination is not always a bad thing. Sometime a great amount of pressure and lack of time can produce really good ideas and work.

In five years - 

• I would like to have completed my BFA.
• I would like to have found more confidence in myself and in my work.
• I would like to continue to learn and grow everyday.
• I would like to be creating better work, and more of it.

At fifty - 

• I want to be successfully living off of enjoying myself and having fun everyday. 
• I want to have gained more experience in both new and old techniques.
• I want to be a more experienced, confident artist. 
• I want to have produced a wide variety of work, and be creating more and more everyday.
• I want to have the ability to do whatever I want, whenever I want.

Personal Manifesto 2 - Steven Stallings

Allow yourself to simultaneously work on several projects at once.

Step back and take a break from a frustrating project or task.

Take the most efficient route even if it's the longest one.

Let your surroundings and life experiences inform your process.

Dream big, but put forth the big effort in order to meet those dreams.

Never burn any bridges.

Be a friend before a business associate.

Learn every skill set you can.

Be a helper.

Show respect.

Analyze and accept your mistakes. Your mistakes may be a new way of approaching an idea.

Know your intentions, concepts, and audience.

Find a mentor.

Ask questions.

Write about what you do in order to breakdown the barriers of misunderstanding.

Deconstruct your ideas and rearrange them to create something new.

Be reachable.

Museum Inspired Art - Steven Stallings

I had the privilege of visiting the Fairview museum. While I was there I saw a Native American piece that I was drawn to. I took a picture of it and made a mixed media piece that was highly inspired by the figures within the piece

Art As a Commodity - Steven Stallings

I created five miniature paintings using acrylic paint and paper. I traded each of these items to random people for items they felt were worth trading.

Personal Manifesto 2- Nathan Mortensen

1. An artist is someone who finds solace, comfort, or meaning in making things, even if the things they make may seem impractical or have no everyday purpose.
2. To quote Calvin, "You can't just turn on creativity like a faucet. You have to be in the right mood."
3. I'll always want to create my own version of something, rather than create a replica. If I want a replica, I might as well just take a picture of said thing.
4. Not everything needs to have some deeper meaning. You can make a thing that has little to no emotional meaning. A deeper meaning can help with the creative process, but one is not always needed. An art piece can just be something nice to look at or fun to make.
5. If I don't follow my own rules, it can't truly be my art.
6. Destruction and decay can be beautiful.
7. It's not your job to impress anyone. It's your job to make what you want.
8. You can tell a lot about a person by the type of things they make.
9. My style is my style. It will be what it will be. I can't force my style to change, but if it does by itself, that's fine. Like handwriting.
10. I've had many interesting ideas by imagining visuals to music.

Personal Gesture Drawing - Brianna Borst.

For my gesture drawing I did the motion of two hands coming together. I wanted to do a gesture that displayed love, so I choose the motion of holding hands.

Inspired By The Fairview - Brianna Borst.

While exploring the Fairview Museum, I came across this artwork called "Last Kiss," which made me recollect a memory from my freshmen year in college. My piece shows two hands reaching for each other, but at the same time, the hands look like they are separating and letting go. My experience from the past didn't necessarily consist of a "last kiss," but it involved seeing an individual and reconnecting and but having to leave each other in the end. I want my piece to show the want to hold on, but the need to let go.

"If you could photograph a time you felt an immense amount of love, what would your camera capture? Describe what your photo would look like."

"Here's a really cheesy one from me. I was really sick a couple of years back and my boyfriend came over in the middle of his busy day to give me a rose and keep me company for an hour while I laid in bed dying. So, if I had to photograph it, it would either be of the flower in a vase on my bedside table or him kissing my hand from that moment."

"I don't know how I would describe it, but it definitely would be the birth of my first child and holding him for the first time. No greater feeling."

"So, 5 years ago my sister had a baby girl, and I was excited obviously, but I didn't think it was for any reason other than having a baby niece that I could love. But when that Olivia came home, that little meant so much more to me than just a baby niece right away. I knew when she opened her beautiful little sweet brown eyes and looked at me that that little girl would hold my heart forever and ever. So to answer your question, my photo would hold the love that I felt for that girl, and the love that I knew she had for me already."

"If I could photograph love, it would be capturing the sunset while swinging with my cousins in the summer, it was such a euphoric feeling."

"My photo would look like my first date with this guy I loved. I didn't pay attention to the time or anything around but him. We just chilled in my car and just talked to each other as if we already knew each other. I would stare at him a lot because I've been beginning to fall in love with everything about him."

"Idk why this keeps coming up to me. I feel love alot when my whole family is all together laughing and talking I love it when my lil sister puts her head on my shoulder and my parents r laughing and holding hands. Something about the parents connecting helps the whole family connect and that's where I feel alot of love. And another thing to add is when the nephews and nieces r there too."

Creative Future- Nathan Mortensen

I have learned to take a step back in my mind to look at every possible option to see what I can map out, link together, or make a relation with. I just dump my emotions and what makes me me into my work. I don't know if that makes much sense, but it does to me.

In 5 years, my creativity will be my job. I will be the provider of the worlds and ideas in novels that people will read or games that people will play.

In 50 years, the majority of my work will be complete. I probably won't be continuing to add more content and story to my worlds, but I will continue to draw and game for fun, even if I get arthritis. I might not make many things anymore, but I would want to stand as an inspiration for other story writers and game developers.

My plan is to take creative writing classes and to someday submit a story to some kind of literature thing. When I get a successful story, I'll want a game tie-in. Maybe I could start an economical trend of making games based on books like there are with movies. And these games won't be crappy cash-grabs. They'll be worked on just as hard as the stories were.

I created this drawing with charcoal in each hand using the gesture of mountain pose (yoga) and moving my arms through the various phases (hands to heart, raise above head, down at my sides, hands to heart, and so forth). I repeated this process for an hour.

Things I have learned in this class-
I learned to love text as art & renewed my appreciation for collage making.
I have learned that art can be simple or complex, both are of value.
Video is something that is interesting to me now, I didn't really think about it at all before.
I learned that creating is a process, not an act.
Being creative is always worthwhile, expirimenting with different mediums, processes, and methods is valuable.
I have learned that I can learn something from anyone and anything.
I have learned that I enjoy my art more if it has personal meaning.
I have learned to analyze art, and life in general & allow it to inspire my work.

In 5 Years -
Professionally-
I would love to be a portrait photographer with a steady income.
I want to own a full frame/large sensor camera.
I will definatly have my AFA, working on a BFA.
I will be regularly submitting to shows.
Personally-
I want a natural light studio in my home, as well as other creative space.
I want to teach my kids to use their creativity in a way that is satisfying to them & have a space for them to create.
I will create work that has meaning to me.

When I'm 50-
I want to be accepted to do an artist residency in a place I've never been.
I want to travel  just for the sake of inspiration.
I will still do portraits.
I will have even more creative space in my home, such as a darkroom, natural light studio, editing office.
I want to have had some work in a gallery.
I want to create things just for fun & fully embrace & enjoy the process without overthinking the results.
I want to feel confident in presenting my work & talking about it.

How do I accomplish this?
Finish my AFA
Get out of debt
Be brave & put myself "out there" more
Create stability in my life
Keep myself motivated by continuous learning (classes, or online, or from others, galleries, etc)
