Attraction Repulsion - Melissa

I chose to center my idea of Attraction/Repulsion on the world's view of being thin. We are obsessed about how we look and have, in the past and currently, devised ways of forcing our bodies to meet what is believed to be the ideal of what they should look like.

I combined images of old Victorian etchings of women's fashion with photographs of people suffering from severe emaciation. The etchings are what many people would agree on being beautiful, while the image behind them is much less desirable and causes discomfort.

The pink hue is a representation of having "rose-colored glasses" about the horrible side-affects one might obtain while incorrectly pursuing the goal of reaching that thin figure. The half-toning of the photograph is also meant to distort the image of the starving individual because many who pursue this ideal thinness don't want to see the bad side of it, all they see is the goal of the the beauty that comes with being thin, hence why the Victorian image is more prominent. The text in the image is a listing of the horrible side effects that come with starvation and when your body doesn't get enough nutrients to support it's self.

Here is a link to the note I wrote on Facebook explaining my project and inviting people to participate:  facebook link
I am creating a photo collage of 35 mouths doing various things.  So far a lot of people are excited to participate and I have around 40 pictures, but I need better quality, more variety of poses and more people before I actually make the collage. Here are a few examples of what I have so far!
