Self Portrait after 15 minutes Emily Brown
I contemplated in what situations I feel most like myself; the conclusion is a bit paradoxical- I feel most like myself when I am naked without voyeurs, when I am wearing makeup and when I am in the shower. These concepts are diametrically opposed. In the end, I got up around 3 AM when nobody would know I was awake, and spent over fifteen minutes putting on a full face of makeup for the first time in more than a week. I then immediately began running a shower, and prepared to get in, and thereby ruin the makeup, but first took a picture through the shower door. I was able to walk the lines between naked and exposed, and between performative and natural. I then edited the photo until I was pleased with the result, and was pleased to hear comparisons to The Mona Lisa as well as ghouls with buttons for eyes. As someone who struggles with self-esteem, I draw similar comparisons on a daily basis.

I furthered the ideas and tone that inspired my in-class flyers. I went one step further and made the piece more personal. I was chemically dependent on benzodiazepines for almost a year. My doctor prescribed them as though they were vitamins that all self-respecting Utah women take. My doctor just added more pills on top when the original ones lost their effect. I still am tempted to take them, even though I know the risks and effects, so to work through that, I put what would have been about a week's worth of Xanax on a tear-off flyer. I can't control if others actually do take a tab, and I didn't make them unusable. If someone or even I didn't mind hot glue with their alazopram, they would be viable.

This is not the updated version. I forgot to get a picture before I submitted it. I will put in a new picture when I have one.

SOME THOUGHTS
What are we but reflections of the people we surround our self with? A reflection of our parents, our siblings, our friends, and even sometimes our enemies. I find there are certain quirks I retain after spending a long period of time with someone. Whether my laugh echos theirs for a small while, or my frame of reference begins to shift, I am made up of what others allow me to see. This is an exploration of the those reflections. Not to say that a person is solely what others give them, but how often are we aware of the consistency of change, in ourselves, that is produced by others? Of course, people change in different degrees. I'm impressionable, pliable even. I experience a lot of change due to the individuals I surround myself with. I am assuming that it different for other people.
PROCESS
Rather than painting the faces of those I associate with, I've gone with a more abstracted approach. The complexity of a person can't be summed up in a portrait, neither can the simplicity. So I didn't see the point of attempting it. I spoke with several individuals with whom I feel have influenced me. Then, after each person, I promptly sat down applied some paint to canvas. I attempted to create something that displayed an echo of the person I spoke with. some felt successful, some did not.
