15 minute self portrait- katelin teresa.

For my 15 minute self portrait, I decided to make a statement about peoples different views on beauty. I put make up on for 27 minutes and made a stop motion video of over 500 images. The title of the piece is 'Man Made.' Here are a few of those photos:

Cookie Castle

Children have an amazing imagination. They have little to no inhibitions, and they don't fear their ideas being rejected. They are convinced that they could be the next superman and that they could live off of pizza and ice cream. They have a continuous need to play and experiment and my piece is about just that. I created a castle of cookies with cinnamon bear soldiers guarding their castle, sleeping, dying, and holding hands. I loved this experiment and the fact that I had a justified reason to play with my food.

Differences

I love how unique each person out there is. Some people are bothered by the chomping of gum while others are bothered by getting woken up. Some people crave m&ms while others crave cheese crackers. I love getting to know people and getting to see which details create them as a whole; with this project I chose to celebrate those details in the form of subject boards. I took photographs of my four subjects eyes, took samples of their DNA, learned their weaknesses, learned their irritants, and took samples of their perfume. These are the results of four very different girls.

Larry

As a group of artists as well as a group of human beings we discussed what attracts us and what repulses us. Something that has always repulsed me is demonic and satanic things. Things of a darker nature make me uncomfortable and give me horrible nightmares while on the flip side I'm drawn towards happy things, cuddly things, and cute things. For this piece I've combined my love of all things huggable with a less than cuddly subject matter and I've named him Larry. (Larry has confused and creeped out many a visitor at my apartment.)

Science

I have always really loved handwriting. It just seems so personal and permanent. So when given the opportunity to collect something It was an easy choice to collect handwriting.

This is a Currency

This is an assignment from the textbook, This Is Not A Book by Keri Smith.

I, as you can see, went all out with it.

 I made an etching on a zinc plate.

Then printed lots of little Trishelle dollars.

We have the best textbook ever, basically.

Science Project

For this project, I had several people I know write the name of their first love on a piece of paper. I left the definition open. From Batman to Sidnie Richards, any answer was right.

They are on display like an entomology collection. First loves are here in the same context as butterflies and spiders. The label below each specimen names the contributor of it.

Attraction/Repulsion

I'm attracted to the idea of being held, of being loved, of being part of someone's life that they don't want to let go of.
I'm attracted to the smile that lights up that person's face when they see me, to the rough and soft texture of their hand against my cheek, to the way their laugh fills an entire room with the amount of love they have for everyone in it.
I'm attracted to the sharing of secrets and stories, to the understanding how another human works, to the way someone can know me better than I know myself.

Saying goodbye is repulsive.
Being refused a connection with someone you've held and worshipped for months on end is repulsive.
Crying into a piece of cloth with our initials on it until it's too wet to do any good is repulsive.

I hope for the crying to bring catharsis. But I also hope the pain doesn't end, because I'm afraid that I could stop loving a person. That idea is the most repulsive thing of all.

"Grief is the price we pay for love." Queen Elizabeth II said that.
It's also the title of this piece.

A Self Portrait, Based in Time.

This is an autobiographical comic. It's 17 pages long, and it documents, by the hour, one day of my life.

I started this project by doing small thumbnail comics, messy hourlies, for every hour of the day I was awake on February 4th 2011. I drew them as soon as the hour was through, getting the high point of those 60 minutes down on paper while it was still fresh on my mind. I then redrew each one, fitting it to a good format, adding backgrounds, making things more consistent, and lettering it in a manner that made things legible.

The day was ordinary. I had a class, worked on art, made some phone calls to my mom about taxes, and went out for tacos and had a non argument about a previous argument with the boy I was dating at the time.

I printed each of the pages on regular 8 1/2 by 11 sheets of paper, folded, stapled, and made zines for whoever wanted one.
Below is each page in reading order, for those who want to squint instead of getting a physical copy.

There is truth, I am just not sure how much is true.
